The food chain describes who eats whom in the wild.

Food chain definition ecology. A food chain also shows how the organisms are related with each other by the food they eat. The study of an individual organism or a single species is termed autecology; Trophic levels and efficiency of energy transfer.

Energy is not created or destroyed. At the bottom of the food chain, the herbage, are the producers. Organisms in an ecosystem affect each other’s population.

There are no decomposers in a food chain. All the other organisms above the producer are consumers. See ecology ecology, study of the relationships of organisms to their physical environment and to one another.

A food chain shows what eats what in a particular habitat. All living organisms can be organized into producers and consumers, and those producers and consumers can further be organized into a food chain. The population of species in a food chain is shown using a pyramid of numbers.

The food chain starts with the producer or plants that convert solar energy into the usable form of energy (food) by the process of photosynthesis which is then eaten by consumers. Each of the levels within the food chain is a trophic level. Every level in a food chain is known as a trophic level.

Photosynthesis is only the beginning of the food chain. How food chains and food webs represent the flow of energy and matter. Trophic cascade, an ecological phenomenon triggered by the addition or removal of top predators and involving reciprocal changes in the relative populations of predator and prey through a food chain.
